Annual Lincoln County Fair

Capitan was founded in the 1890's and incorporated in 1941. In 1950, Capitan earned the title, The Birthplace of Smokey Bear. During a 17,000 acre fire in the Capitan Mountains, a tiny, badly singed cub was rescued and became the official, live Smokey Bear. In the late 1970's, a State Smokey Bear Museum and Park was established, where the body of Smokey is entombed.
