The Village of Ruidoso Downs, best
known for its horse racing track, also
offers many fine lodging and dining
facilities, as well as major tourist
attractions & an annual craft fair.
In 1946, the town got its first post
office under the name of Green Tree.
The name was changed to Ruidoso
Downs so the race track would have
its own postmark.
The Hubbard Museum of the
American West has grown from its
original incredible collection to
being a truly first class historic
Western museum. The famous
Stradling collection includes bits,
spurs, bridles and saddles from
around the world, and an amazing
collection of carriages, wagons &
horse drawn vehicles spanning
hundreds of years.
Ruidoso Downs is home to the famous
racetrack that bears its name. World-class
thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing
begins Memorial Day weekend and continues
until Labor Day. The Ruidoso Downs
racetrack is the site of the All American
Futurity. That race's 1965 purse of $419,000
made it the richest quarter horse race in the
world. Adjacent to the Track is the Billy the
Kid Casino
